Fountain Pen Review: Otto Hutt design 04 Wave White and Rose Gold

When I was new to fountain pens and fountain pen use, I liked and collected white pens. I liked white pens because they look neat, elegant, and stylish. Back then, I had a couple of white pens and they are adorable. I have changed color preferences for my fountain pens through the years, but I have happy memories with my white pens and they will always have a special place in my collection.

When I revived my blog at the height of the pandemic last year, I received the kind support of several pen companies from Europe, including one that was new to me—Otto Hutt, from Germany's "Golden City" of Pforzheim. I fell in love with the company's Bauhaus style and its workmanship is amazing. They also have beautiful, appealing, and elegant white fountain pens. One such pen is the Wave White and Rose Gold from their design 04 series. I reviewed the Black Square Guilloche design 04 and design 06 Seashell Pink earlier, and they are both lovely, beautiful pens. But the Wave White and Rose Gold is different. It's stunning!

In my years of reviewing pens and related products, I noticed that brands present their products differently. Though presentation boxes and accessories are usually unused and kept in storage — or discarded — after purchase, I enjoy seeing them and their branding. These packaging details reveal how a company values its products. I like Otto Hutt's presentation boxes for their pens. They're elegant, compact, and sturdy. It's worthwhile to know that these boxes are also 100% Made in Germany.

Otto Hutt's packaging for their pens is elegant in black and silver or white.
Presentation boxes for Otto Hutt pens are elegant, compact, and sturdy. These boxes are carefully designed to ensure the safety of their contents, and like Otto Hutt pens, these boxes are also 100% Made in Germany.

After my first review of the design 04 pen in October last year, Otto Hutt has reached more pen users, and the company has launched new pens since. I'm glad to know that the new Otto Hutt pens still speak precision, quality, and functionality.

Otto Hutt design 04 fountain pen pays homage to aesthetic straightforwardness. Based on an original design by Otto Hutt, this pen combines classic with traditional craftsmanship. It is 100% made in Germany, produced in their own factory with a 70-man workforce. This slim and compact medium-sized pen is made of solid brass. The barrel has a three-dimensional guilloché pattern with waves that vary in depth. These are coated with rose gold and then supplemented with several layers of lacquer, which are sanded and polished after each application.

The cap and clip of this pen are both made from brass with a highly polished rose gold coating. For its size, this pen is well balanced. It's not too heavy from the materials it's been made from, but it's not light, either. Design 04 Wave White and Rose Gold is available as a fountain pen, rollerball, twist ballpoint pen, and twist pencil.

The Otto Hutt design 04 Wave White and Rose Gold fountain pen has the following measurements and specifications:
  • Length, capped: 5.2 in | 13.2 cm
  • Length, uncapped: 4.8 in | 12.2 cm
  • Length, cap posted: 6.7 in | 17 cm
  • Full pen weight: 38.7 g
  • Color: White
  • Trim: Rose Gold
  • Body material: Brass
  • Clip material: Brass
  • Nib material: Stainless steel, but also available in 18ct gold
  • Filling mechanism: Converter or cartridges (standard international long or short)

The barrel of this design 04 pen has a three-dimensional guilloché pattern with waves in varying depths coated with rose gold and several layers of lacquer which are sanded and polished after each application.

Design04 fountain pens can be inked using standard international short or long cartridges. It can also be filled with ink using the converter that is included in each Otto Hutt fountain pen purchase. The converter that came with the design 04 fountain pen is branded with the Otto Hutt logo and I prefer this because it helps me prevent mix-ups and use the correct converter each time. A wrong converter could result not only in ink spills but also in breakage.

The clip of the design 04 pen is Otto Hutt's unique mechanical spring clip handcrafted from solid brass with a high-quality rose gold coating and checked by hand several times to ensure quality. This clip is a special feature of Otto Hutt writing instruments. It is highly polished but well constructed. There are no sharp corners or uneven parts that could snag a shirt pocket or pen case slot. It feels solid, very sturdy, and the spring works perfectly.

The design 04's cap also bears three engravings including the full Otto Hutt logo, the pen's identification, and an abbreviated logo. The cap's rose gold coating is super shiny and I did not use a pen rest in these photos as I'm avoiding scratching it.

The full Otto Hutt logo is engraved on the top part of the cap above the clip.

Otto Hutt pens are unique pieces and have individual identification. A 6-digit numerical code is engraved on the opposite side of the cap, which also bears the word GERMANY. This code is also noted on the pen's warranty card, and it ensures that every writing device is one of a kind.

Each Otto Hutt pen is given a 6-digit code as its identification.
The cap's finial is engraved with a variation of the Otto Hutt logo.
The lacquered guilloche on the barrel of design 04 is very elegant and classy. I love seeing the rose gold filling peeking from the waves and the gloss of highly polished lacquer that is smooth to the touch.

Otto Hutt offers both steel and 18ct gold nibs in EF, F, M, and B for their fountain pens. A stylized image of half a nib is engraved into the nib. The design04 fountain pen sent to me has a steel bicolor medium nib that is platinum- and rose gold-plated. The plating is neatly done and it's also very pretty.

For their fountain pens with rose gold trims, Otto Hutt uses bicolor nibs with platinum- and rose gold-plating.
Otto Hutt design 04 fountain pens.

Otto Hutt design 04 is a slim and compact fountain pen. While capped, it is shorter than the design 06, TWSBI ECO, Laban 325, and Lamy Safari.

Uncapped, it's the same length as the design 06 and not too short compared with the Laban 325 and Lamy Safari. This comparison shows that the design 04 fountain pen is not so compact at all. In my previous design 04 review, I showed the pen in comparison with a Lamy 2000 and Faber Castell e-Motion where the three pens were almost the same length when they were uncapped.

To test the medium nib in the Wave White and Rose Gold fountain pen, I filled it with Otto Hutt Gold Dust, a beautiful fire red ink with gold shimmer. Out of the box, the medium nib wrote smoothly and consistently with excellent flow and visible ink shimmer. I tested the nib for a couple of days, and despite being filled with a shimmer ink, I did not experience any hard starts or skipping, it wrote well every time I used it. This pen's medium steel nib is so good. The design 04 is an excellent pen, it's well-made, sturdy, and very comfortable to use for long periods of writing. Get one for your collection!

Otto Hutt Gold Dust ink reminds me of summer sunsets when the sky is filled with warm hues of red and orange.
I love this warm, fiery red ink even without the gold dust shimmer.
But look at that shimmer! This ink is so red-hot!

Otto Hutt design 04 fountain pen is an excellent pen. The Wave White and Rose Gold is classy and elegant, sturdy and well-made. Get one from Otto Hutt where it retails for €225.00 (steel nib) to €335.00 (18 carat gold nib), or from authorized sellers worldwide. Find the one nearest you!

Fountain Pen Review: Otto Hutt design 06 Seashell Pink

Last year has been a remarkable time for everyone, including Rants of The Archer. It was a time for rebirth, and a time of discovery. While the pandemic wreaked havoc on every single country in the world, products from across the globe poured in. I got the opportunity to review amazingly excellent products through brand collaborations, and also made friends with wonderful people from different places. One brand that truly impressed me with the quality of their products is Otto Hutt. Their products are well-crafted and designed for functionality. They're beautiful pens, too!

When Otto Hutt was relaunched in 2016, they offered a modern collection of seven different design lines, design01 to design07. Each line has unique variations in shape, material, and pen type. design06 has a classic and modern design with a shape that fits perfectly into the hand. The series has rich color schemes in black and red; soft, calming pastels in summer colors of cashmere, lilac, sand, and pistachio; elegant rose and white with rose gold accents; and lacquered classics ash gray, seashell pink, lavender violet, and arctic blue.

Otto Hutt design06 series is available as a fountain pen, rollerball pen, and twist ballpoint. All pens are 100% made in Germany, and everything is produced on-site in the Otto Hutt factory in Pforzheim. This review is focused on the design06 Seashell Pink fountain pen with rose gold accents, a lovely, elegant, and well-built fountain pen.

Otto Hutt design 06 Seashell Pink with rose gold trims.

design06 Seashell Pink is one of the four popular colors from the Otto Hutt Configurator that was made available in their standard product range in early 2020 as a response to customer requests. Arctic Blue and Lavender Violet with platinum décor, Seashell Pink with rose-gold fittings, and Ash Grey with aubergine-coloured décor are now available as regular offerings. design06 Seashell Pink is made of solid aluminum with a special lacquer coat in matt finish, giving it a unique feel.

Otto Hutt writing instruments all carry the label "Made in Germany." Initiated by the German Federation of Jewelry and Watches, this label shows that the product came from Germany and is a unique distinction within the jewelry industry. To get the distinction of this label, a brand must fulfill an extensive range of requirements. To fulfill such requirements, Otto Hutt products are exclusively manufactured in Germany using high-quality materials and a sustainable manufacturing process.

Otto Hutt design06 fountain pens have the following measurements and specifications:
  • Length, capped: 5.4 in | 13.9 cm
  • Length, uncapped: 4.8 in | 12.2 cm
  • Length, cap posted: 6.1 in | 15.5 cm
  • Length, barrel only: 3.14 in | 8 cm
  • Length, section to nib: 1.6 in | 4 cm
  • Length, cap: 2.4 inches | 6.1 cm
  • Weight, capped/empty barrel: 44.9 g | 1.58 oz
  • Weight, cap only: 13 g | 0.45 oz
  • Weight, barrel only: 30 g | 1 oz
  • Body material: Solid aluminum
  • Clip material: Brass, coated with platinum
  • Nib material: Steel or 18ct gold
  • Nib widths: EF, F, M, or B
  • Filling mechanism: Otto Hutt converter or cartridges (standard international long or short)

This Otto Hutt design06 Seashell Pink fountain pen has a bicolor medium nib.

design6 fountain pens can be filled with ink using standard international short or long cartridges. It can also be inked using the Otto Hutt converter included in each fountain pen purchase. The Otto Hutt converter is branded with their logo and this helps me to prevent pen and converter mix-ups and to use the correct converter for each pen. A mismatched pen and converter could result in breakage or ink spills.

The design06 has Otto Hutt's unique mechanical spring clip that is handcrafted from solid brass with high-quality platinum coating. To ensure the quality of the clip's design and functionality, it is checked by hand several times. This clip is a special feature of Otto Hutt writing instruments. It is highly polished and constructed well. There are no sharp corners or uneven parts that could snag a shirt pocket or pen case slot. It feels solid, very sturdy, and the spring works perfectly all the time.

All design06 pens, including fountain pens, rollerball pens, and ballpoint pens have the Otto Hutt mechanical spring clip.

The pen's cap finial is engraved with the Otto Hutt logo, in the same rose gold color of all the pen's trims and accents.

Otto Hutt pens are unique writing instruments with individual numbering which make them valuable to those who collect them. A six-digit numerical code is engraved on the opposite side of the cap finial. This code is also noted on the warranty card, and it ensures that every writing device is a unique item and one of a kind.

Each Otto Hutt writing instrument is unique and has a six-digit code engraved on the cap. This code ensures that the Otto Hutt writing instrument belongs to its owner for a lifetime.
The cap ring is engraved with the Otto Hutt logo.
The other side of the cap ring is engraved with Germany, indicating that it is exclusively made in Germany using high-quality materials.

Otto Hutt's pen design and construction are truly impressive. These long brass threads in the barrel and section ensure stability and durability. These threads will always stay in place and prevent unnecessary loosening of pen parts.

Brass threads on Otto Hutt's pens ensure stability and durability.

Otto Hutt offers both steel and 18ct gold nibs for their fountain pens. The nib on this Seashell Pink fountain pen is a happy surprise for me because it is a lovely bicolor nib that is platinum- and rose gold-plated. The plating is neatly done, and it's very pretty. I also noticed that this nib has the Otto Hutt logo engraved onto it instead of the previous design of a stylized image of a half nib.

Nib widths for design06 are available in EF, F, M, or B. This nib has the Otto Hutt logo and width (M) engraved onto it.

The nib on my design06 Seashell Pink fountain pen is very pretty. I love the platinum- and rose-gold-plating on this nib which matches the rose gold plating of the section, clip, cap ring, finial, and barrel end.

design06 is my second Otto Hutt fountain pen after the design04 I received in October last year. The cigar-shaped form of design06 makes it longer and chunkier than the slim design04. The two pens are both made from solid brass and have the Otto Hutt unique mechanical spring clips.

Otto Hutt design04 (top) and design06 (bottom) fountain pens.
However, they have different nib design and width. design04 on the right has a bicolor platinum- and yellow gold-plated nib. It also has a different nib design than the platinum- and rose-gold nib of design06.

Otto Hutt design06 is a cigar-shaped standard-sized fountain pen. While capped, it is longer than design04, almost the same length as a Lamy AL-star or Stanford Wood Studio's Ghost's Breath, but shorter than a Leonardo Furore.

Uncapped, however, design06 is now the same length as the design04, and shorter than the other three pens in the batch.

I love matching pens and inks. To test how the design06's steel medium nib writes, I filled it with the latest Robert Oster Shake'N'Shimmy Rose Gold Antiqua ink with rose gold flecks/shimmer. The ink looked so beautiful pouring out of the rose gold medium nib which wrote so well out of the box. It's smooth, springy, and wet. This pen's steel nib is so good, it's perfect! Get one for your collection!

Otto Hutt's design06 fountain pen is an excellent pen. It's elegant, classy, and modern. This full-sized cigar-shaped pen is well-built, sturdy, and comfortable for writing. The barrel and cap are made from solid brass, fitted with the Otto Hutt mechanical spring clip. The pen's overall grainy texture has a unique feel to it. The design06 also comes with a 10-year availability and guarantees on all parts. Get one from Otto Hutt where it retails for €160.00, or from their authorized sellers in 23 countries worldwide. Find the one nearest you!

Last year, Otto Hutt celebrated 100 years of traditional craftsmanship, technical perfection, and timeless design. The company marked this important milestone with many unique products including Unique by Otto Hutt, a bilingual magazine, new pastel colors for design06, three new additions to design04, and the iconic and innovative designC fountain pen by award-winning international designer Mark Braun.

Fountain Pen Review: Otto Hutt design 04

Here's another first in Rants of The Archer blog: Otto Hutt, a pen brand from Germany's "Golden City" of Pforzheim. Founded by Karl Hutt in 1920 and successfully run by his son Otto, the company has a first-class reputation around the world through centuries of making jewelry and writing instruments. Using the Bauhaus style, the company produced new products for pocket consumer goods and writing devices made of silver. Otto Hutt still uses silver in some of their pens, but they mostly use brass and aluminum now.

Otto Hutt was relaunched in 2016, and the company's new package includes a modern collection of seven different design lines, design01 to design07. Each line has several variations such as shape, material, and pen type. The design04, however, is an exception as it is the only line with an extensive combination of designs and variations. Otto Hutt design04 is available as a fountain pen, rollerball, ballpoint, or pencil in ten combinations of patterns and designs including this black lacquered square guilloche fountain pen. The lacquered guilloche on the barrel is elegant and classy.

Pen products are presented differently by their brands. Though presentation boxes and accessories are usually unused and kept in storage — or discarded — after purchase, I enjoy seeing them and their branding. To me, such details reveal how a company values its products. I like Otto Hutt's presentation box for their pens. It's elegant, compact, and sturdy, and like their pens, these boxes and other accessories are also 100% Made in Germany.

This sleeve, printed with Otto Hutt logo in silver, covers the box carrying the design04 fountain pen and accessories.
The box carrying the Otto Hutt design04 fountain pen and accessories is elegant and sturdy.
All Otto Hutt writing instruments are packaged with an ink converter, a cleaning cloth, user manual, and warranty card.

I came across Otto Hutt on Instagram. I was very impressed by the pens from their different series which all speak precision, quality, and functionality. When I discussed this collaboration with them, I didn't know what pen they were going to send. The design04 fountain pen surprised me. It has a subtle design, but it is elegant, classy, and functional. It looks ultra-modern and very Bauhaus, despite coming from an original design by Otto Hutt from the 1960s.

Otto Hutt design04 fountain pen is 100% made in Germany, produced in their own factory with a 70-man workforce. This slim and compact medium-sized pen is made of solid brass. The barrel has a checkered guilloche pattern, lacquered in several color coats with a final velvet, matte finish. The cap and clip of this pen are both made from brass and plated in platinum. For its size, this pen is well balanced. It's not too heavy from the materials it's been made from, but it's not light, either. The design04 is available as a fountain pen, rollerball, twist ballpoint pen, and twist pencil.

Otto Hutt writing instruments all carry the label "Made in Germany." Initiated by the German Federation of Jewelry and Watches, this label shows the product came from Germany and is a unique distinction within the jewelry industry. To get the distinction of this label, a brand must fulfill an extensive range of requirements. To fulfill such requirements, Otto Hutt products are exclusively manufactured in Germany using high-quality materials and a sustainable manufacturing process.

Otto Hutt design04 fountain pen has the following measurements and specifications:
  • Length, capped: 5.25 in | 13.3 cm
  • Length, uncapped: 4.9 in | 12.4 cm
  • Length, cap posted: 6.75 in | 17 cm
  • Length, barrel only: 3.1 in | 7.8 cm
  • Length, section to nib: 2 in | 5 cm
  • Length, cap: 2.3 inches | 5.8 cm
  • Weight, capped/empty barrel: 34 g | 1.20 oz
  • Weight, cap only: 13 g | 0.45 oz
  • Weight, barrel only: 21 g | 0.75 oz
  • Body material: Brass with guilloche pattern in a checked design
  • Clip material: Brass, coated with platinum
  • Nib material: Steel or 18ct gold
  • Filling mechanism: Converter or cartridges (standard international long or short)

The design04's clip is Otto Hutt's unique mechanical spring clip handcrafted from solid brass with a high-quality platinum coating and checked by hand several times to ensure quality. This clip is a special feature of Otto Hutt writing instruments. It is highly polished but well constructed. There are no sharp corners or uneven parts that could snag a shirt pocket or pen case slot. It feels solid, very sturdy, and the spring works perfectly.

The design04's clip bears Otto Hutt's branding and the pen's identification. The company's logo is laser etched on top of the cap behind the clip.

Otto Hutt pens are unique pieces and have individual numbering. A 6-digit numerical code is engraved on the opposite side of the cap, which also bears the word GERMANY. This code is also noted on the warranty card, and it ensures that every writing device is one of a kind.

The cap's finial is engraved with a variation of the Otto Hutt logo, and some people view this branding a little too much. I think the first two branding marks are a nice touch, but I prefer the finial to be smooth and shiny and free of any engravings like this pen's barrel end.

The lacquered guilloche on the barrel of design04 is very elegant and classy. Otto Hutt describes the process of making the barrel pattern: "The barrel sleeves are given a guilloche pattern in a checked design. This is followed by multiple lacquering with colored lacquer and finally with high-quality matt lacquer." The guilloche pattern is smooth to the touch and a perfect combination with the brass barrel.

design04 can be inked using standard international short or long cartridges. It can also be filled with ink using the converter that is included in each Otto Hutt fountain pen purchase. The converter that came with the design04 fountain pen is branded with the Otto Hutt logo and I prefer this because it helps me prevent mix-ups and use the correct converter each time. A  wrong converter could result in breakage or ink spills.

Long brass threads in the barrel and section ensure stability and durability. These threads will always stay in place and prevent unnecessary loosening of the pen parts.

For its fountain pens, Otto Hutt offers both steel and 18ct gold nibs in EF, F, M, and B. A stylized image of half a nib is engraved into the nib. The design04 fountain pen sent to me has a steel bicolor broad nib that is platinum- and yellow gold-plated. The plating is neatly done and it's also very pretty.

The Otto Hutt design04 is a slim and medium-sized fountain pen. While capped, it is shorter than a Faber Castell e-Motion or Lamy 2000 and shares the same length with the Kaweco DIA2.

Uncapped, it's another story. The design04 is now longer than the Faber Castell e-Motion and shares the same length with the Lamy 2000, Kaweco DIA2, and Pelikan M400. This length comparison shows the design04 is not so compact at all. It's a pen that anyone can use for comfortable writing, even without the cap. I also think that if the design04 fountain pen came in the same size as the Faber Castell e-Motion, it will be a heavy brass pen.

To test how the design04's steel broad nib writes, I filled it with Otto Hutt Ocean Blue ink, and the pen performs so well. I inked it out of the box and it wrote smoothly and consistently with good ink flow. In the days that I tested it, this pen always writes even when I have not used it for days. It doesn't skip, and it never had any hard starts at all. This pen's steel nib is so good, it's perfect! Get one for your collection!

Erratum: the design04's cap is made of brass, not silver.

When Otto Hutt sent design04 to me, they kindly included a bottle of one of their handmade inks. I wasn't so sure about their inks, but testing it in my design04 proved me wrong.

Otto Hutt also carries a series of inks for their fountain pens. There are five different colors in their selection of handmade inks, including emerald, black night, ocean blue, red rose, and gold dust. They also have permanent blue and black inks. I got a 30 ml bottle of Otto Hutt Ocean Blue ink together with the Design 04 fountain pen.

Otto Hutt Ocean Blue fountain pen ink.

Also called 'schoolboy' ink, Ocean Blue is a bright, vibrant blue ink — the blue that I like — that is wet and saturated. It has good flow in the design04's broad nib and shows sheen in some paper types. It has a faint scent of detergent/soap, too! Lastly, I like the Otto Hutt ink bottle because it's so simple yet functional. It's glass, has a wide opening, and a coated metal cap. I just wish they use a more sturdy material for the ink bottle's box.

Otto Hutt Ocean Blue is a nice blue ink, perfect for everyday writing. Get it for your pens!

Otto Hutt design04 fountain pen is an excellent pen. It's subtle, classy, and elegant. This slim, compact, medium-sized pen is well-built, sturdy, and comfortable for writing.
