Fountain Pen Review: Esterbrook JR Paradise Orange Sunset

The Esterbrook Pen Company is now one of the world's most prolific makers of fountain pens and accessories. Since 2018, the year that Kenro Industries revived the brand, the Esterbrook Pen Company has launched one product after another. But we are not complaining! Please keep them coming, Esterbrook! 

Just recently, the Esterbrook Pen Company launched a new set of fountain pens in their JR Pocket Pen series. Introduced as part of the revival of the iconic J fountain pen, the JR Pocket Pen Paradise Collection is the first limited edition set from Esterbrook and it is themed as a tropical vacation for fountain pen lovers. The Paradise Collection makes me miss the sea even more now that most of us cannot go out to take vacations. Think soothing breezes, warm ocean currents, bungalows, painted buoys, panoramic views for miles, mangroves, marinas, and lounging for hours with a cocktail in hand and mellow melodies floating through the air. It's the perfect series of fountain pens for us right now! 

A new packaging design also accompanied the launch of the limited edition JR Pocket Pen Paradise Collection. I love the new Esterbrook red boxes and they look so neat!

The J model was Esterbrook’s original sleek and suave, classic 1940’s and 50’s pocket pen that appealed to many people then and now. It was well-received for its elegance and practicality, which was a key selling point after the war. The new Esterbrook Pen Company revived the J model in 2020 and called it the JR, short for J Reborn. 

The JR Pocket Pen is an excellent "heritage" pen, built and designed for a comfortable writing experience. It's stylish and meant to match the user's style, with an elegant, non-fussy compact size. It's a slimmer pen than the Estie but also fills with ink through cartridges or converters. The JR Paradise Collection is offered in three beautiful limited edition colors, Lemon Twist, Orange Sunset, and Blue Breeze. Each color features an accented trim near the dome.

I got the Orange Sunset fountain pen and it's so beautiful! The pen's material looks as if it's glowing especially under a bright light. It looks like a glowing fire rod or sweet orange candy sticks. This orange pocket fountain pen is an amazing modern design honoring an iconic pen. The bright orange resin is perfectly complemented by the gold-plated trims, while the turquoise accent on the finial is an eye-catcher.

Esterbrook JR fountain pens can be filled with ink using international cartridges or an Esterbrook converter, both included with each purchase. Unlike other pocket pens, the JR takes on a full ink converter which makes it easier to fill from ink bottles. The section of JR Pocket Pens has an ergonomic grip that ensures comfortable writing. While it is a pocket pen, the body is long enough to use for writing without the need to post the cap.

The Orange Sunset's cap finial, which is a new design, is also very similar to the black button jewels found in the earlier J fountain pens.

The JR Paradise fountain pen is fitted with a #5 steel nib made especially for Esterbrook by Jowo from Germany. It is available in a variety of sizes, including Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad, 1.1 stub, and the Esterbrook specialty nibs Journaler (by Gena Salorino of Custom Nib Studio) and Scribe (by J.J. Lax Pen Co.). The markings on the nib include the Esterbrook Eternity logo and "M" (nid width).

The Medium nib on the Orange Sunset wrote smoothly out of the box. It is one of the smoothest medium nibs I have tried and I'm glad that I can comfortably use it for regular writing for notes, lists, and journaling.

The Esterbrook Eternity symbol/logo is made up of two connected "E's," with no beginning or ending representing a timeline of perpetuity, linking tradition to modernity. It is a reminder of founder Richard Esterbrook's spirit and hard work, so the two connected E's are also translated to "Esterbrook Endures." The symbol/logo made its first appearance on the red polishing cloth that was included with the Estie Lilac.

Esterbrook Pen Company offers a wide variety of fountain pen sizes. They have regular-sized fountain pens such as the Estie in oversize (called OS) and regular sizes, but they also offer compact, pocket-sized pens like the JR.

The JR Pocket Pen has the same length as a Pelikan Souveran M400, but I forgot to include one in this set. The JR is the smallest pen in this group, but when you uncap the pen, it is almost the same length/size as the Montegrappa Miya 450. Uncapped, it's the smallest and slimmest pen in this lot of pens. Despite that, the JR is a well-designed pen that looks classy and elegant, and comfortable to use.

To test how the medium nib in this JR fountain pen writes, I filled it with matching orange ink, the brand new Esterbrook Tangerine. The Orange Sunset wrote so well out of the box, and the #5 Jowo steel medium nib wrote smoothly. I did not experience any scratchiness, hard starts, or ink skipping. I had no problems using the JR Orange Sunset fountain pen out of the box.

I'm so happy that I can use this orange fountain pen for regular writing for my notes, lists, and journaling. The Esterbrook JR Orange Sunset is such an enjoyable pen. It's elegant, classy, versatile, and one that can be used for long periods of writing without any discomfort.

Fountain Pen Review: BENU Talisman Foxglove

Since its launch in 2017, Russian pen maker BENU has kept its goal of making writing instruments for those who prefer bright colors and new designs that are playful, stylish, and fun. The Moscow-based group has made amazing pens with multiple glossy facets, color-changing materials, mosaic art-inspired tesserae, and shiny, glittery, colorful bodies. Each pen from their collections is meticulously planned with bold, unique, and eye-catching designs. 

Last month, BENU launched Talisman, a new fountain pen series inspired by great legends and mystical beliefs that surround talismans, amulets, and other magical items used to bring luck, protection, money, love, or special abilities. I'm a big fan of folklore, magic, crystals, and charms and I love the mystery and appeal of this fascinating series!

BENU Talisman Foxglove

Each of the five pens in the Talisman series is inspired by a substance that is added to the pen's material. Each of the five substances has magical attribution ascribed from myths. Foxglove,  inspired by the extraordinary little bell-shaped foxglove flowers from Western Europe is actually infused with dried foxglove flowers. See BENU's video here. Folk myths suggest that mischievous fairies gave these flowers to foxes to wear on their paws, enabling them to sneak silently into rural villages. The Talisman Foxglove fountain pen's inspiration of foxglove is said to bring good luck and fairy's magic. 

Dragon's Blood is inspired by Dragon's Blood and infused with the bright red resin from Dracaena draco, the Dragon Tree, said to bring strength and invulnerability. Edelweiss gets its inspiration from the flower that grows in the Alps and is infused with the flower's dried petals. This famous flower is said to bring true love and bravery. Mandrake gets its inspiration and colors from the plant with purple flowers and green leaves, it is also the only glow-in-the-dark pen in this series. Mandrake roots are said to be potent and mandrake root powder is infused into this pen to enhance sexuality and bring wealth. Lastly, Peacock Ore derives its inspiration from the mineral Peacock Ore or Bornite, a stone with iridescent colors similar to the bird it is named after. This pen is infused with Peacock Ore powder, thought to bring happiness and creativity.

This fountain pen is inspired by the foxglove and infused with the plant's dried flowers.

Talisman fountain pens are made from high-quality acrylic which is weatherproof and durable. Capped, this pen weighs 21.9 grams, and approximately 20 grams when uncapped, which is just right in the hand. The Talisman is slightly shorter than the Euphoria, but still allows for inking with standard international long cartridges or converter. The screw-on cap can be posted and the multi-faceted barrel end is slightly tapered for this.

The Talisman has a multi-faceted body with a tapered barrel that helps in posting the pen. See the alternating facets in the Foxglove's cap and in the barrel below. And like the other BENU pens before, the Talisman fountain pens have exceptional gloss and shine.

BENU has kept their clip design consistent from the Supreme model to the newer pens Tessera, Tattoo, and Euphoria. Their standard clip is stainless steel, which adds gloss and shine to the pens. Stainless steel is also durable, and the clip's top can be pressed so it can be easily posted to a shirt pocket or pen loop.

The multi-faceted and tapered barrel of this pen is not only beautiful but also very cool! It's also an identifying feature of BENU pens. The material has exceptional gloss and shine, and the combination of orange, black, and gold is fascinating. I just love watching it!

BENU has continuously used Schmidt nibs on their pens. I love that they are consistently smooth, wet, and trouble-free. They write so well out the box!

I have always noticed the long sections of BENU fountain pens. I like this feature because it helps a lot in comfortable writing.

My first BENU fountain pen was the Classic Ghost White Silver, a short, clipless pocket pen. They are now called the Minima. Through the years, BENU released several pens, and I am very fortunate to have some of these pens that are crafted well by their design team led by the Chief Designer and BENU Co-Founder Alex Semanin.

Although it is shorter than the Euphoria and Tattoo the Talisman is still a full-length fountain pen, sharing the same length as a Lamy Al-star. Capped, it is shorter than the Leonardo Furore and Esterbrook Estie Oversized, but longer than the Faber Castell Ondoro. Uncapped, it shares the same length with Lamy and Leonardo, and only a little shorter than the Estie.

To test how the Talisman fountain pen writes, I filled it with Robert Oster Red Orange, a matching orange ink with excellent flow and consistency. The medium Schmidt nib wrote smoothly out of the box, without the need for any adjustments or tuning. I did not experience any hard starts and the pen wrote instantly. It wrote very well, without skips or inky blobs. The Talisman is an excellent and enjoyable pen, and it is comfortable to use even for long periods of writing.

Robert Oster Red Orange is a good match for Foxglove and I love how wet and smooth this medium nib writes.

Each pen in the Talisman collection is accompanied by a beautifully designed flyer with a lot of interesting information about the inspiration material and the myth behind it.

I am very happy with the BENU Talisman Foxglove and I am recommending it to anyone who wants to know the brand and explore its colorful and fun designs. It's a beautiful pen full of meaning and I'm glad to have one in my collection. BENU is an excellent pen maker who uses only the best materials and takes great care in manufacturing their pens. Fountain Pen Review: Leonardo Officina Italiana Momento Zero Grande Pura Arancio Fiammante

In November last year, Leonardo Officina Italiana, one of the world's most prolific and talked-about pen makers today, launched the Momento Zero Grande Frosted. The Frosted is their first-ever demonstrator pen and has a beautiful translucent icy effect. Following the release of the Frosted, collectors and enthusiasts expressed their hope that Leonardo will offer color demonstrator pens. Two months later, many collectors rejoiced when Leonardo Officina Italiana announced the release of the Pura Collection, an all-new trio of brightly-colored demonstrator pens in the Momento Zero Grande series.

Leonardo released the Pura Collection to the world on March 4. The MZ Grande Pura fountain pens are turned by hand from solid blocks composed of more than 20 manually designed parts. All pens in Leonardo's collections are turned by expert craftsmen using old loading systems, giving their unique pens soul and warmth. Pura fountain pens are available in three captivating demonstrator resin with a satin finish—Grigio Anthracite (Anthracite Gray), Blue Acqua, and Arancio Fiammante (Flame Orange). Leonardo offers the three fountain pens in three finishes, including palladium, yellow gold, and ruthenium.

I'm the Orange Ranger and I am over the moon with this orange demonstrator pen.
It's bright, warm, happy, and oh-so gorgeous!  

The Pura Collection fountain pens have the new thinner clips, which is reminiscent of 1930s Italian pens. The Arancio Fiammante is also my first Leonardo with three cap rings.

All fountain pens in the Pura Collection have a satin finish that feels so smooth to the touch. This finish seems to be done on both inside and outside, giving the pen a consistent look. MZ Grande fountain pens have a piston filling mechanism with a large ink capacity of 1.5ml. The Arancio Fiammante's barrel has simple brand engraving and pen number. Each pen in the Pura Collection is numbered, but the Collection is not a limited edition series.

Leonardo Officina Italiana MZ Grande Pura fountain pens are fitted with friction assembled (not screwed) #6 JoWo nib with extra-resistant lamination friction designed for easy removal. Available nibs are Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad, and Stub (1.1), both in steel and 14k gold. An elastic nib in Fine is also available in 14k gold. The MZ Grande Pura fountain pens are also fitted with a black ebonite feed and have a 1.5 ml piston filling capacity that are both produced in-house.

My Pura Arancio Fiammante's pen is fitted with a B nib that wrote so well out of the box. It's smooth and wet and did not need priming or modification.  

The new MZ Grande nibs can be taken out of the pen easily. The marking to indicate width is engraved on the nib shoulder.

Momento Zero Grande, a full-sized fountain pen, shares approximately the same length as a Laban 325, Bexley Intrepid, and Edison Collier. Uncapped, it's the same length as the Bexley and Esterbrook pens.  

The Momento Zero Grande is a postable pen, and it posts comfortably. However, I write with my pens unposted. Posting makes pens long and that affects my writing speed and comfort. However, posting provides balance in writing to some people, so it helps that this is a postable pen.

I love filling my pens with matching ink colors. For the Arancio Fiammante, I chose an orange ink that has more yellow instead of the usual red, and this Laban Apollo Orange is the perfect ink match! The MZ Grande's piston mechanism worked well, and the Broad nib wrote wet and smoothly without the need for adjustments or tuning.

Big nibs can write small, too! I love how this Broad Leonardo nib writes wet and smooth, it simply glides on paper. Also, the Arancio Fiammante and Laban Apollo Orange ink are so perfect together! It's as if they were made for each other.

The MZ Grande Pura Arancio Fiammante is another exceptional and well-designed fountain pen from Leonardo Officina Italiana. The fountain pens are fully handmade in Italy and include a full lifetime mechanical warranty. For some time now, the Furore Arancio has been my end-of-the-day-happiness and make-me-smile pen. Now there are two! This orange demonstrator pen is a delight to look at and even more wonderful to use. Get one for your collection!

These days, Leonardo Officina Italiana is one of the most active and talked about pen brands. Anyone into pens who is on Instagram knows this. Leonardo also has the fastest workshops with their current pen line up getting new additions almost every quarter. From the initial series of Momento Zero and Furore, they now have the Cuspide, Speranza, Messenger, and quite a number of limited edition pens in various materials in between. The Momento Zero and Furore also got a size upgrade: the "Grande" with piston filling mechanism and ebonite feeds, which the Pura Collection belongs to. I'm always excited to see new pens coming from the Leonardo workshop, and I'm sure more exciting pens are coming in this year.

Fountain Pen Review: Leonardo Officina Italiana Furore Arancio

This month, my blog features a selection of local brands, some of my favorites, and a new, exciting name that has been a pen chart-topper for quite some time. Here is the Furore fountain pen in the Arancio finish from Leonardo Officina Italiana, one of the most talked-about pen brands these days. My research about Leonardo Officina Italiana brought me to the scenic UNESCO World Heritage Site of Amalfi Coast, to the mesmerizing fjord and churches of Furore town, and the 45-year history of this family-run father-to-son pen brand.

Did you know that Leonardo's Furore collection is inspired by a magical place? And that these pens are all made by hand? The Furore derives its inspiration from a corner of the Amalfi Coast, a magical place where land, sea, and Leonardo's origins meet. The Furore and all the pens from Leonardo's collections are passionately hand-turned by expert craftsmen using old loading systems, giving their unique pens soul and warmth.

The outer box of the Furore is designed like colorful traditional Italian tiles. It also says "Fatto a mano in Italia nelle Officine Italiane Leonardo" which translates to "Handmade in Italy in Leonardo's Italian Workshops."

The Furore is Leonardo's second pen model launched in 2018 after the famous and outstanding Momento Zero line. Inspired by the form and design of vintage Italian pens, the Furore's rounded ends bring to mind the looks of the old classics. The Furore Arancio has a beautiful vivid color that comes from a mix of iridescent shades of orange that reminds me of cat's eye gemstone. It is a full-sized fountain pen that was hand-turned from a single solid bar of high-quality resin with a vintage shape and tapered grip section designed for comfortable writing. A well-balanced fountain pen, it can be used for comfortable writing whether posted or unposted. 

The Furore is not a limited Leonardo production, but it is an open numbered series, with each pen number engraved on the barrel together with the Leonardo name. My Arancio is pen N°2837 and I feel it's a very unique pen with its own identification.

Polished chrome and orange look so perfect together. The chrome trims in the Arancio complement the pen's orange color so well. The two slim cap rings are smooth and highly polished, as well as the two rings on the pen's barrel.

Leonardo Furore fountain pens can be filled with ink using international standard cartridges or the supplied customized screw-on Leonardo converter with a metal knob. Unlike most converters, Leonardo's converters screw to the pen's section for a secure fit and avoid ink spills. The screw-on converter also allows for a piston-like filling mechanism by removing the cap at the end of the barrel.

The Furore's three sections: barrel, section + converter, and cap. 

Removing the cap in Furore's barrel end allows piston-like ink filling. This is possible as the converter is screwed on to the section.

The Furore shares the same clip with the Momento Zero. It's a shiny polished chrome clip with a tiny roller at the end so it can be easily posted to a shirt pocket or pen loop.

Leonardo's ink converter is very impressive. It is sturdy and well made, and the Leonardo logo engraved on the knob is a nice touch. 

The Furore barrel is engraved with "Leonardo Officina Italiana" and the pen's number. 

When I received the two pens from Leonardo, I marveled at their beautiful material and polished steel nibs. The Furore is available with either steel or 14k gold #6 nibs in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad, or Stub (1.5mm) widths. My Arancio is fitted with a steel Bock nib engraved with the Leonardo logo and it looks elegant. It also wrote perfectly. I have been writing with fountain pens for the last thirteen years, and I have tried pens with excellent nibs, but the Furore Arancio's medium nib is one of a kind. It's one of the smoothest nibs that I have ever tried, and writing with it is a wonderful experience.

The Momento Zero is Leonardo's first pen series, shortly followed by the Furore. The two pens are so alike in their length, shape, and trims, although the Momento Zero has flat ends and the Furore has pointed ones, more like the classic cigar-shape.

The Furore, a full-sized fountain pen, shares approximately the same length with a Tibaldi N°60 and TWSBI Diamond 540. The Bexley Intrepid and Edison Collier are longer pens when they are capped. Without their caps, the Furore is the same length as the N°60, Collier, and Diamond 540. 

The Furore is postable, but I love writing with it unposted. Posting makes this pen long and affects my writing speed and comfort. However, posting provides balance in writing to some people, so it helps that the Furore is a postable pen.

In good company. The Furore shares approximately the same length as the Tibaldi and TWSBI fountain pens while capped.

When they are uncapped, the Furore is now the same length as the Tibaldi, TWSBI, and Edison pens.

I like matching pens with inks, so I chose this bright red-orange Robert Oster ink for the Arancio. I ink my pens by filling the converter first before putting it back onto the section feed. Doing this, I noticed that ink flow to the feed was very fast and the medium nib wrote smoothly and very wet out of the box. The steel nib is springy and it performed so well without the need for any adjustments or tuning. It also matched Robert Oster Orange Zest ink so perfectly.

The beautiful Arancio can do wonderful ink art, too! The medium nib is just perfect for intricate strokes and fine lines.

The Furore Arancio is an exceptional and eye-catching pen. It's my end-of-the-day-happiness pen, my make-me-smile pen. This orange pen is a delight to look at and even more wonderful to use. Get one for your collection!

These days, Leonardo Officina Italiana is one of the most active and talked about pen brands. Anyone into pens who is on Instagram knows this.
